How does communication design work?
Communication design is a system of creative design and strategic thinking to define messages and tailor them to the recipient.
Design is not art, but what is design?
Design is often confused with art – and yes, design can incorporate art—but design follows a clear logic: it is goal-oriented and application-driven, meaning it is tailored to the channel, content, and effect.
Good design aligns sender and receiver and positions values, impression, and recognition as a strategic system. The resulting media components should embody something – and, ideally, reinforce the underlying message. Various media can therefore be used to make ideas visible, audible, tangible, or otherwise more perceptible and thus more impactful.
What does a designer do?
Good designers are like translators of messages into other forms of perception. Professional design is not characterized by complexity; on the contrary, complex ideas are distilled and reduced to their absolute core in order to communicate the objective as effectively and efficiently as possible.
Using AI for design?
AI can answer all your questions, on virtually any topic in the world. But one thing AI can’t give you is an understanding of design. It’s precisely the meta-levels, the strategic thinking, that distinguish design. This means being able to ask the right questions, contextualize results, and have a comprehensive view of the process.
For example: You can tile your kitchen yourself or build your own house. But without knowledge, you cannot rate material, proper installation or the process of work. Reality mostly unfolds in the detail – simple procedures might cause unexpected turns. Only experience will have you prevent such failures.
Many people go for DIY projects and that’s fantastic. However, you always have to factor in the necessary energy costs—time, sweat, and mental energy.
As a partner, I’d be happy to support you in independently expanding your design knowledge, understanding processes, and implementing them yourself. Feel free to contact me.
How to understand Design?
If you wanna design, yet have a hard time to understand it, remember this: “form follows function”. No matter if it is visual, auditive or another form of media used to transcribe an idea or emotion – it’s gotta arguably relatable to it’s intent and goal.
Understanding design means becoming sensible for what perception is doing to you, how it is shaped and how you can consciously and effectively apply this knowledge. Beside this, you gotta learn the tools that suit your skills most and that will enhance the quality of your creations.
Interested in design?
It’s best to discuss everything in person. I’d be happy to explain the advantages of design in the context of your project.
